Experience Salzburg through opera and theater, Christmas markets, nostalgic fairground traditions, Mozart celebrations and spring music festivals.
LOCAL CULTURE
Festivals & Events
Salzburg’s events offer different reasons to visit: opera and theater at the summer festival, concerts during Mozart Week, fairground rides at Rupertikirtag and the Christkindlmarkt in winter.
Choose dates around the event you actually want to attend. A market visit can fit between sights, while a performance needs time for admission and the full running time. Festival preparations can also affect the cathedral squares, as we experienced in July 2026.
THROUGH THE YEAR
Event Highlights
A selection of festivals, seasonal celebrations and cultural experiences to consider when planning your visit. Check official event or venue websites for current dates, programs and ticket information.
Salzburger Festspiele · July–August
The summer Salzburg Festival presents opera, theater and classical concerts. Its best-known traditions include Jedermann on Domplatz, while other performances take place in the festival halls and additional venues.
During our July 2026 visit, preparations prevented us from visiting the cathedral as planned. Even if you are not attending a performance, check access near the venues.
For ticket holders, confirm the venue, performance language, surtitles and running time. Reserve accommodation early and leave a comfortable gap between dinner and admission.
Salzburger Christkindlmarkt · November–January 1
The main Christmas market fills Domplatz and Residenzplatz, with stalls selling crafts, food and seasonal treats. Entry is free. Check the opening hours for your date, as holiday hours differ.
Visiting was an annual tradition for my friends and me when I was younger. We took a late-morning train from Munich, spent the afternoon at the market, then had dinner before returning home.
I would stay until after dark for the lights, while keeping the return train in mind. Allow extra walking time through the busiest parts of the market.
2026/27 market dates, checked 6 October: The main Christkindlmarkt runs from 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027. See the organizer’s dates and holiday hours and the Salzburg Festival program.

Rupertikirtag · September · Cathedral Squares
Rupertikirtag is a traditional fair held around St. Rupert’s Day, with historic rides, stalls and entertainment around the cathedral squares.
On one September visit, I came across a fair with nostalgic rides and old-fashioned amusements. The timing and setting suggest it was Rupertikirtag, although I did not record its name at the time.
Check the daily program if you want to see a particular performance or tradition. The fair occupies spaces you might otherwise use for sightseeing, so expect a different walking route through the squares.
Mozartwoche · Late January · Various Venues
Mozart Week takes place around the composer’s January 27 birthday. Its program combines orchestral and chamber music with other productions that vary each year.
Choose individual performances by program and venue rather than assuming every event has the same format. A museum visit can fit earlier in the day, with time left for dinner and the evening performance.
Check concert availability before committing to travel if a particular artist or work is your main reason for coming.

Salzburg Easter Festival · Around Easter
Founded by Herbert von Karajan in 1967, the Easter Festival focuses on opera and classical concerts. The Großes Festspielhaus is its main venue.
The program extends beyond Easter Sunday itself, and dates change each year. Choose your performance dates first, then arrange accommodation and travel around them.
Salzburg Whitsun Festival · Pentecost Weekend
The Whitsun Festival is a shorter spring festival with opera, concerts and other performances. It has its own program, separate from the main summer festival.
Pentecost moves with the Easter calendar, so do not assume it falls on the same weekend each year. Check the exact dates and performance times before deciding how many nights to stay.
For a spring music trip, compare the Easter and Whitsun programs before choosing your dates.
