Why Make this Journey
The country north of San Francisco is where I would go for coastal landscapes, long walks and a less urban side of Northern California. A day in Marin is worthwhile on its own, but linking Point Reyes, the Sonoma Coast and Mendocino creates a much more substantial trip. I would allow roughly five to seven nights for the full loop, returning inland through wine country rather than driving the same road twice.

Route & Time
San Francisco → Marin Headlands or Muir Woods → Point Reyes → Sonoma Coast → Mendocino and Fort Bragg → Healdsburg, Santa Rosa and Sonoma → San Francisco. A rental car is required to give this route the flexibility it needs. Napa Valley is an optional extension, not something I would squeeze into an already busy last afternoon.
Marin: Choose a Day, Not Every Stop
Begin with the Golden Gate crossing. For a coastal day, explore the Marin Headlands and choose a walk such as Tennessee Valley. Point Bonita has a spectacular setting, but the suspension bridge to the lighthouse is currently closed and access to the viewing area is limited. Check the National Park Service schedule before making it the focus of the day.
For a redwood day, reserve Muir Woods parking or shuttle access, then combine the visit with Mill Valley or Sausalito. I love hiking on Mount Tamalpais, but a substantial hike from Mill Valley is a separate full-day plan. Do not try to add a summit walk after touring the entire Headlands.
Point Reyes & the Sonoma Coast
Give Point Reyes its own day, and preferably a nearby overnight. The lighthouse area is remote and exposed, with steep steps when open; wildlife viewing and coastal walks take additional time. I have enjoyed long loops from Bear Valley through the wooded ridges and back from the coast.
Continue north toward Bodega Bay and the Sonoma Coast. The road is part of the experience: leave time for pullouts, small communities and walks. Bodega Bay and nearby Bodega have been used to film Hitchcock's The Birds.
Mendocino, Fort Bragg & the Inland Return
Spend two nights around Mendocino if possible. The town and coast deserve time away from the car; Fort Bragg and a Skunk Train excursion offer another day's possibilities. On the return, take the inland route toward Healdsburg and Santa Rosa, then Sonoma. This gives the trip a different second half, with town squares, restaurants and vineyards.
If you want Napa Valley as well, add nights for Calistoga, St. Helena, Yountville and Napa on the inland return trip to San Francisco. I would choose a few winery appointments and allow someone else to drive if tasting. Calistoga's spa experiences can be appealing, but prices deserve a careful look before booking.

Planning Notes
Coastal mileage is slow mileage. Book overnight stops before busy weekends, download maps, and plan fuel and meals without assuming every small community has late opening hours. Check park access, trail conditions and Highway 1 before setting off. For Point Bonita and Point Reyes, closures can materially change the day's plan.
