Plan & Book Your Trip to Regensburg
I recommend spending two full days in Regensburg, or three to four days if you want to include excursions along the Danube. A single day gives you an excellent introduction, but staying overnight allows you to enjoy the quieter lanes and historic squares after day visitors have left. Use these suggestions to plan an unhurried visit around the places and rhythms you enjoy most. (Note: If you book using the affiliate links below, I may earn a small commission. Regensburg
Plan & Book
Transportation
Book Transportation
The historic center is compact and largely pedestrianized, so walking is the best way to get around once you arrive.
Walking the Old Town
The central lanes and riverside paths are best explored on foot, though sturdy shoes help on historic cobblestones.
Regensburg Hauptbahnhof
The main railway station sits just south of the center, an easy 10 to 15-minute walk from the Old Town.
Munich Airport Rail Link
Direct regional trains connect Munich Airport with Regensburg, making international arrivals and departures very straightforward.
Danube Sightseeing Boats
Seasonal boats offer a relaxing way to view the city skyline from the water or travel eastward toward Walhalla.
Bicycles
An enjoyable way to explore the riverside paths along the Danube, which is how I have arrived on two separate trips.

Book Accommodations
Spanning from ancient Roman foundations to the scenic island crossings of the Danube, Regensburg offers distinctly different settings when booking hotels, guesthouses, or vacation rentals.
Old Town (Altstadt) Hotels
Stay within the medieval core for immediate walking access to historic squares, cathedral views, and evening dining.
Hauptbahnhof Station Hotels
A practical choice if you are arriving by train or prefer easy luggage handling before onward travel.
Stadtamhof Stays & Rentals
Cross the Stone Bridge for apartments and private inns with great views back toward the city.
St. Emmeram & Dörnbergpark Stays
Consider the southern edge of the center for leafy park walks while remaining within walking distance of the sights.

Book Activities
What I enjoy most is the combination of deep history and lively street life, from Roman ruins to sunny café squares.
St. Peter’s Cathedral
Admire the imposing Gothic spires dominating the skyline and explore the historic heart of the city.
The Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke)
Walk across this 12th-century engineering marvel for sweeping views over the Danube and the medieval waterfront.
Dreieinigkeitskirche Tower Climb
Climb the church tower for my favorite panoramic view looking across the red-tiled rooftops of the Old Town.
Historische Wurstkuchl
Stop beside the river for a traditional grilled sausage snack at what is considered the world's oldest sausage kitchen.
Porta Praetoria & Roman Ruins
Discover massive stone masonry dating back to Roman legionary fortress walls built into the fabric of the medieval center.

Book Journeys
Regensburg is an ideal starting point for exploring the Danube and Altmühl valleys or continuing through Bavaria.
Walhalla
Travel east by boat, bicycle, or bus to visit the neoclassical marble temple overlooking the Danube plain.
Weltenburg Abbey & the Danube Gorge
A memorable day trip west to see the dramatic limestone river gorge and the historic abbey brewery.
Schulerloch Cave
A seasonal excursion into the Altmühl Valley to explore a fascinating prehistoric cave beneath steep limestone cliffs.
Munich and Nuremberg
Accessible onward destinations by rail that each deserve dedicated multi-day visits rather than rushed day trips.
Passau
A natural pairing downstream along the Danube, offering a three-river setting and a slower pace.
