Plan & Book Your Trip to Nara

Nara brings ancient temple grounds, open parkland, and shopping streets together into a compact area that works brilliantly for a day on foot. While many visitors treat it only as a quick day trip to see and feed the deer, I recommend one to two full days and would gladly stay two nights to explore its world heritage sights and museums properly. Book Transportation

Central Nara is very walkable, while the larger historical sites outside the center require a short bus or train connection.

Kintetsu-Nara Station
The closest railway station to the historic center, putting you just a five-minute walk from Kofukuji and Nara Park.

JR Nara Station
Useful for JR pass holders; it adds an enjoyable twenty-minute shopping street walk along Sanjo-dori toward the park.

Walking Central Nara
The best way to experience the central streets, the temple approaches, and the wooded paths of Nara Park.

Local Buses
Local bus routes make it easy to connect the central park sights with the extensive Heijo Palace grounds farther west.

Yamato-Saidaiji Station
A useful Kintetsu rail connection serving the western edge of the expansive Heijo Palace site.

Book Accommodations

We visited on a day trip from Kyoto, but these are the areas I would consider when booking hotels, ryokan, or vacation rentals.

Kintetsu-Nara & Higashimuki Hotels
My first choice for a base, putting you steps from Kofukuji, the park, and bustling shopping arcades.

Sarusawa Pond Stays & Ryokan
A scenic central area close to restaurants, historic lanes, and quiet morning views across the water.

JR Nara Station Hotels
A highly practical base for train arrivals, with convenient hotels near the station and a direct walk into the center.

Naramachi Traditiona Stays & Rentals
Consider this historic merchant district for a quieter base tucked among traditional wooden streetscapes.

Book Activities

What I enjoyed most was the sheer scale of the historic temple grounds and how naturally they connect to the parkland.

Todaiji and the Great Buddha
Walk through the monumental wooden Nandaimon Gate to experience the immense scale of the Great Buddha Hall.

Kofukuji
Explore the open grounds of this ancient Fujiwara temple, including the reconstructed Central Golden Hall.

Nara Park and the Deer
Stroll the broad lawns and wooded paths where free-roaming deer mingle with visitors among ancient trees.

Nigatsudo Terrace
Walk uphill from Todaiji to this wooden terrace for sweeping views across the city rooftops.

Heijo Palace Site
Give a separate half-day to exploring the reconstructed gates and vast open grounds of Japan's eighth-century capital.

Nara fits naturally into a journey through the Kansai region, connecting easily with surrounding cities by rail.

Kyoto
Our base for visiting Nara, offering an easy train ride through changing suburban and bamboo-covered landscapes.

Osaka
A quick rapid-train connection away, providing a lively contrast of modern high-rises and busy street food.

Kobe
Combine your time in Kansai with this relaxed port city, framed by lush green hills and the bay.
