Plan & Book Your Trip to Munich
Munich has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I still return every year. For a first visit, I recommend at least four to five days so you can take in the historic palaces and major museums without missing the riverside cycling, neighborhood cafés, and leafy beer gardens that define everyday life here. Transportation
Book Transportation
Munich is remarkably easy to navigate without a car, using its integrated transit network alongside walking and cycling.
Integrated MVV Transit
The U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams, and buses operate as one seamless network reaching virtually every corner of the city.
Walking the Altstadt
The historic core is compact and largely pedestrianized, making walking the most enjoyable way to explore between central landmarks.
Bicycles
Dedicated bike paths make cycling an ideal way to explore the Englischer Garten and the banks of the Isar.
München Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof
Major rail hubs providing extensive national and international train connections, though be mindful of ongoing construction around the central station.
Munich Airport (MUC)
The city's major international gateway, connected conveniently to the center by frequent S-Bahn trains.

Book Accommodations
I recommend choosing an area that fits the neighborhood atmosphere you prefer, since transit connects the entire city so well when booking hotels or vacation rentals.
Altstadt Hotels
Stay in the historic center to have churches, historic squares, and pedestrian shopping streets right outside your door.
Schwabing Stays & Rentals
We rented apartments here for several summers; it offers a familiar neighborhood feel with excellent cafés, restaurants, and park access.
Maxvorstadt Hotels & Stays
A lively university and museum district filled with art galleries, bookshops, and casual dining spots.
Haidhausen Stays & Rentals
Located east of the Isar, this area features pleasant squares, quiet residential streets, and easy access to Ostbahnhof.
Glockenbachviertel Boutique Stays
A vibrant neighborhood known for independent boutiques, popular bars, and a relaxed, creative evening scene.

Book Activities
What I love most is how naturally Munich combines world-class royal history and art with time spent relaxing outdoors.
The Residenz
My favorite palace complex in Europe, featuring vast courtyards and richly decorated rooms that reward several hours of exploration.
Englischer Garten & Eisbachwelle
Watch surfers tackle the river wave before strolling through this massive park toward the beer garden at the Chinesischer Turm.
Viktualienmarkt
A lively open-air market in the heart of the city, perfect for browsing local specialties and enjoying an informal lunch.
Olympic Park & BMW Welt
Walk the rolling green hills beneath the striking 1972 tent roofs and explore contemporary automotive design next door.
Königsplatz & Museum District
Explore outstanding art collections at Lenbachhaus or the Pinakotheken alongside important modern history at the NS-Dokumentationszentrum.

Book Journeys
Munich is one of my favorite bases for exploring southern Germany and the nearby Alps by train.
Lake Starnberg
An easy day trip by S-Bahn for boat rides, lakeside walks, and sweeping views toward the Alps.
Regensburg
A straightforward regional rail trip to explore a remarkably preserved medieval old town on the Danube.
Nuremberg
Travel north by train to wander among imperial castle walls, historic streets, and fascinating museums.
Salzburg
A classic cross-border rail excursion that works well as a day trip or a more rewarding overnight stay.
Chiemsee
Head east toward the Bavarian Alps to visit King Ludwig II's island palace on Bavaria's largest lake.
