The Rhine and Moselle meeting at Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, with riverboats and the monument seen from above.

Plan & Book Your Trip to Koblenz

Koblenz’s riverfront was the highlight of our stay—with its broad promenades, boats passing along the Rhine, and massive fortress views. I recommend one full city day to cover the center, though two days allow a much more relaxed pace. Adding a second or third night makes sense if you want to use the city as a base for substantial Rhine or Moselle river excursions. Transportation

Book Transportation

We arrived by train, and walking is the best way to explore the Old Town, but the city also offers unique transport across the water.

The Cable Car (Seilbahn)
Taking the cable car across the Rhine to the fortress plateau is a wonderful way to appreciate the city's setting.

Walking the Riverfront
The Old Town and central riverfront work very well on foot, allowing you to easily connect the squares with the promenades.

Regional Trains
The main station offers great connections; the RE2 from Frankfurt is particularly scenic as it follows the left bank of the Rhine.

Local Buses
Bus 1 is a useful connection for reaching the Altstadt and Deutsches Eck if you want to skip the 20-minute walk from the station.

Sightseeing Boats
Multiple operators use the landing stages along the Rhine promenade; checking your specific pier and return time is essential.

Book Accommodations

We stayed at the Four Points Flex the main station, which was practical for our train excursions, but pick your hotel based on how much time you want in town versus traveling the rivers when booking hotels or vacation rentals.

Hauptbahnhof Station Stays
Highly practical for arrivals, departures, and day trips by rail, though it requires a longer walk to reach the riverfront.

Old Town Hotels & Rentals
A great choice if you want to focus on evening walks, restaurants, and cafés around the historic squares like Jesuitenplatz.

Rhine Waterfront Stays & Hotels
Appealing for immediate access to the promenade and open views, but check how close your property is to the boat landings.

Book Activities

What I enjoyed most about Koblenz was how the landscape shapes the city, making the open spaces and river views the main attractions.

Deutsches Eck
See where the Moselle joins the Rhine from this riverside monument.

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
Take the cable car up to this fortress plateau for sweeping views over the city, the rivers, and the surrounding hills.

The Rhine Promenade
Walk along the broad, open waterfront to watch the boats pass and enjoy the changing views of the opposite shore.

St. Castor's Basilica
A historic Romanesque church whose quiet churchyard offers a change of atmosphere between the busy shopping streets and the river.

Old Town Squares
Wander through the center to enjoy a mixture of historic buildings and postwar rebuilding, pausing at local cafés and bakeries.

Book Journeys

Koblenz is a fantastic base for exploring two distinct river valleys without having to pack up and change hotels.

The Middle Rhine
Take a classic sightseeing cruise south toward the Loreley to see a dramatic landscape of steep vineyards and hilltop castles.

The Moselle Valley
Take a train excursion along the Moselle to Cochem to experience a very different, winding river landscape.

Frankfurt
A highly scenic train journey away, offering international flights and a major rail hub for wider German travel.

Bonn
Continue north along the Rhine to explore another historic riverside city with a very different character.
