Plan & Book Your Trip to Kobe

Kobe is a rewarding city that you can easily explore from its green hills down to the water in a single day, though I would happily return for a night or two. The combination of historic neighborhoods, beautiful hillside gardens, and the bustling working port makes it a fantastic addition to a Kansai trip. Use these ideas to help plan your visit. Transportation

Book Transportation

I find getting around Kobe simple, whether you are arriving by train or using the local subway to connect the hills to the harbor.

Sannomiya Station
The most central hub for regional trains, connecting directly to Osaka in about 20–25 minutes.

Shin-Kobe Station
The station for long-distance Shinkansen trains, located further uphill and close to the Nunobiki Ropeway.

Walking the Neighborhoods
Walking is highly rewarding here, especially as you make your way downhill from the historic Kitano area toward the harbor.

City Subway and Buses
A quick and easy way to navigate the city, especially for the short transfer between Sannomiya and Shin-Kobe.

Kobe Airport
The local airport is seamlessly connected to central Sannomiya via the Port Liner.

Book Accommodations

While we visited as a day trip and kept our hotel in Osaka, these are the areas in Kobe I would consider when booking hotels or vacation rentals:

Sannomiya Station Hotels
The most practical, central base for accessing transit, shopping arcades, and restaurants.

Harborland & Meriken Park Stays
Consider this area if you prioritize open views of the bay, the Port Tower, and maritime history.

Kitano Hillside Stays
A quieter, more historic neighborhood tucked into the hills, known for preserved European-style houses and boutique lodgings.

Motomachi & Chinatown Hotels
Stay here for apartments and hotels right next to covered shopping arcades and the lively street food of Nankinmachi.

What I enjoyed most was the relationship between the hills and the bay, seeing the city from above and then looking back from the water.

Nunobiki Herb Gardens & Ropeway
Ride the ropeway up the mountain for beautiful gardens and sweeping views over the entire city and bay.

Kitano Historic District
Walk through this hillside neighborhood known for its historic Western-style merchant houses.

Motomachi & Nankinmachi (Chinatown)
Wander through the covered shopping arcades and the lively, food-filled streets of Chinatown.

Ikuta Shrine
A beautiful, historic shrine located surprisingly close to the bustling streets of Sannomiya.

Harborland and Bay Cruise
Finish your day by the water, taking in the Port Tower and seeing the city's green slopes from a sightseeing boat.

Book Journeys

Because Kobe is so well-connected, it fits seamlessly into a wider trip through the Kansai region.

Osaka
A very easy rail connection offering busy shopping arcades and a fantastic food scene; this is where we based ourselves.

Kyoto
Head east for a longer stay focused on traditional culture, temple gardens, and historic lanes.

Nara
Make a separate day trip here to explore the massive historic temple grounds and open parks.
