Heidelberg Castle above the Old Town and the Neckar River, backed by wooded hills.

Plan & Book Your Trip to Heidelberg

I recommend giving Heidelberg one or two full days, with an overnight stay if you want to explore the wooded hills, enjoy a relaxed evening meal, or visit the Christmas markets after dark. The mix of university life, riverside meadows, and historic ruins gives this city a youthful energy that rewards slowing down. Transportation

Book Transportation

I often arrive by train and use the local trams to reach the center, though walking and cycling are my favorite ways to explore the neighborhoods and riverbanks.

Trains to Heidelberg
The main station sits west of the historic center, making Frankfurt a highly convenient approach for regional or direct connections.

Walking and Cycling
The pedestrian Old Town is wonderful on foot, and cycling is an excellent way to connect the neighborhoods along the Neckar.

Local Trams and Buses
A quick and practical way to cross the city, especially for the transfer from the main station to Bismarckplatz.

The Funicular Railways
The easiest way to reach the castle and the higher wooded slopes of Königstuhl without an exhausting uphill climb.

Frankfurt Airport
The most practical international gateway, offering direct train connections toward Mannheim and Heidelberg.

Book Accommodations

I have previously stayed with friends and at the Heidelberg Marriott, but I recommend choosing an area based on your walking and dining plans when booking hotels or vacation rentals:

Altstadt Hotels
The best choice for immediate access to the castle approach, university sights, and exploring the old streets on foot.

Bergheim and Hauptbahnhof Stays
A highly practical base for quick rail arrivals and onward trips, especially if you stay near Bismarckplatz for easier Old Town access.

Neuenheim Rentals & Guesthouses
Cross the river for a quieter stay among residential streets, neighborhood cafés, and the green paths of the Neckarwiese.

Book Activities

While the castle ruins make a memorable first impression, some of my favorite moments here are simply sitting at a café on Marktplatz or looking back at the city from the riverbank.

Heidelberg Castle
Take the lower funicular up to explore the red-sandstone ruins, courtyards, and sweeping terrace views over the river and Old Town.

The Alte Brücke
Walk across the historic bridge for an incredible, wider view of the castle and city rising against the hills.

Old Town and University Quarter
Wander down Hauptstraße and explore the side streets, checking out the Heiliggeistkirche and the historic student prison along the way.

The Neckarwiese and Philosophenweg
Cross to the northern bank to relax on the riverside meadows, or climb the steep Schlangenweg for a famous higher perspective.

Königstuhl Woodland
Take the historic upper railway beyond the castle to trade the city streets for quiet, marked trails through the wooded hills.

Book Journeys

Heidelberg works perfectly as its own short break, but its rail connections also make it a natural stop on a wider journey through southwestern Germany.

Schwetzingen
A very manageable half-day trip to explore the grand, meticulously landscaped palace gardens just outside the city.

Neckar River Cruises
Take a local sightseeing sailing to see the city and the beautiful, green river valley from the water.

Frankfurt
A natural rail pairing that offers striking skyscrapers, international flights, and easy onward connections.

Nuremberg and Munich
Excellent options if you are continuing south and east for longer, multi-night stays in Bavaria.
