The Hungarian Parliament building on the banks of the Danube in Budapest.

Plan & Book Your Trip to Budapest

Budapest is a city I definitely want to return to. Spending three nights gives you a solid overview, but I recommend about five nights to enjoy four full sightseeing days. The crisp autumn weather perfectly suited our relaxed pace as we explored both sides of the river and took in the sheer scale of the architecture along the Danube. Book Transportation

I loved exploring Budapest on foot, though the historic transit options are a joy in their own right.

Walking the City
Take your time walking the grand boulevards and crossing the beautiful bridges that connect Buda and Pest.

The M1 Underground
I highly recommend riding the small, low-slung historic trains on the M1 line beneath Andrássy Avenue.

City Trams and Buses
The broader public transit network makes it simple to cross the river or reach sights outside the immediate center.

Funicular and Boats
Ride the funicular up Castle Hill for the views, and use sightseeing boats to see the city from the water.

Airport Express
The 100E bus connects the airport directly with the city center around the clock for a straightforward arrival.

Book Accommodations

I recommend choosing a base grounded in the atmosphere you prefer, whether looking for hotels, apartments, or vacation rentals in the busy center of Pest or the quieter hills of Buda.

Pest Riverfront Hotels
A highly scenic area keeping you close to the Danube promenade, the Parliament and central bridges.

State Opera & Andrássy Stays
Staying near Andrássy Avenue puts you right among grand architecture, boutique hotels, and historic underground stations.

Jewish Quarter Rentals & Hotels
A great choice for apartments and hotels near historic courtyards, lively cafés and central dining options.

Castle District (Buda) Stays
Consider this area for a quieter, elevated stay among historic streets and sweeping views across the river.

Book Activities

What stayed with me most was the massive scale of the city, especially when viewed from different heights.

Buda Castle and Funicular
Ride up the hill to explore the historic castle grounds and take in sweeping views across the river.

The Great Market Hall
I particularly enjoyed browsing the stalls here, where you will find paprika, sausages and fresh produce.

Danube Boat Tour
Seeing Budapest from the water offers a completely different perspective on its scale and beautiful bridges.

Thermal Baths
While we missed them on our first trip, spending an afternoon at the historic baths is high on my list for a return visit.

State Opera & Andrássy Avenue
Walk the grand boulevard near the Opera House to appreciate the worn beauty of the older neighborhood buildings.

Book Journeys

Budapest is a fantastic hub for exploring Central Europe by train, making it a natural fit for longer regional journeys.

Vienna
A classic onward train connection bringing you to grand imperial palaces and historic coffeehouses.

Bratislava
Stop here on your way along the Danube to enjoy a much smaller Old Town and a hilltop castle.

Munich to Budapest
Budapest makes a highly rewarding final stay if you are traveling east through the Bavarian and Austrian landscapes.
