Salzburg’s character changes quickly as you move from the busy lanes beneath the fortress to the right bank, wooded hills and palace grounds. This guide separates central areas from outdoor excursions and helps you choose a base with the right balance of atmosphere, access and quiet evenings.

Areas to Explore
Salzburg's compact size makes its different areas easy to explore without constantly changing transportation. Most first-time visitors concentrate on the Altstadt, but crossing the Salzach or heading onto the surrounding hills quickly changes the atmosphere.
Altstadt: Historic Salzburg
The Altstadt contains the Salzburg most visitors come to see: Getreidegasse, Mozart's birthplace, the cathedral, Residenzplatz, Mozartplatz and the lanes beneath the fortress. It is undeniably beautiful, but also extremely crowded at peak times. I much prefer walking here early in the morning or returning in the evening after many day visitors have departed.
Best for: First visits, historic atmosphere and walking to major sights
Right Bank & Mirabell Gardens
Across the Salzach, the area around Mirabell offers a useful counterpoint to the dense Old Town. Schloss Mirabell and Mirabellgarten are the major attractions, while Mozart's Wohnhaus is also on this side of the river.

Mönchsberg
The wooded Mönchsberg rises directly beside the Old Town but feels removed from the streets below. The elevator near Griesgasse makes the climb effortless and emerges near the Museum der Moderne. I particularly enjoy this area for its elevated views over the rooftops, fortress, river and surrounding mountains rather than for checking off individual sights.
Best for: Panoramic views, quieter walks and escaping Old Town crowds
Hellbrunn Palace
South of central Salzburg, Hellbrunn feels more spacious and relaxed than the Old Town. The palace, grounds and famous water features make it a destination rather than simply another city neighborhood.

Salzburg's Eastern Hills
On one visit I stayed outside the center on a hill east of the Old Town. The location was less convenient for simply stepping outside and sightseeing, but the reward was an extraordinary sunset view across Salzburg toward the Alps. Staying outside the historic core can provide a completely different impression of a city that otherwise seems dominated by tourism.
Best for: Views, quieter evenings and travelers willing to commute

GREEN SPACES
Parks & Outdoors
Salzburg's outdoor appeal begins inside the city but quickly expands into the surrounding landscape. Gardens, wooded hills and the Salzach provide easy breaks from sightseeing, while lakes and Alpine scenery lie just beyond the city.
Mirabellgarten
Mirabellgarten is Salzburg's most formal central green space, with symmetrical flowerbeds, fountains, sculptures and carefully arranged views toward the Old Town and fortress. It is easy to walk through rather than requiring a separate excursion, and I particularly like it as part of the approach from the railway station toward the historic center.
Best for: Formal gardens, fortress views and an easy central walk
Mönchsberg
Mönchsberg provides one of the easiest ways to exchange crowded streets for trees, walking paths and panoramic views. You can reach the top quickly using the elevator near Griesgasse and continue walking along the ridge.

Salzach
The Salzach divides Salzburg's historic core and provides an easy orientation point while walking around the city. Bridges such as Mozartsteg and Marko-Feingold-Steg connect the two banks and repeatedly open views toward the Old Town, fortress and surrounding hills. Crossing back and forth is one of the simplest pleasures of exploring Salzburg on foot.
Best for: Easy walks, city views and connecting both sides of Salzburg
Hellbrunn Gardens
Hellbrunn offers much more open space than central Salzburg. The palace grounds, lawns and water features make the area particularly pleasant when you want a break from dense historic streets.

Salzburg's Surrounding Lakes
Fuschlsee, Mondsee, Wolfgangsee and Attersee are among the lakes I've explored around Salzburg. Together they show how quickly the landscape changes once you leave the city. Mountains rise directly behind clear water, villages line the shores and opportunities for walking, cycling and scenic drives make the region worthy of several days rather than a rushed excursion.
Best for: Scenic drives, cycling, swimming and multi-day exploration
Königssee & Berchtesgaden
Across the German border, Berchtesgaden and Königssee provide some of the most dramatic scenery near Salzburg. I've visited several times, including trips to the salt mine and excursions into the mountains.

Where to Stay
Choose the Altstadt for historic atmosphere and immediate access to major sights, while allowing for higher prices and daytime crowds. The right bank around Mirabell offers convenient station access and an easy walk across the Salzach. Hotels on the hills or farther outside the center can provide quieter evenings and wider views, but check the walking gradient, bus connections and return options after dinner. For a short stay, convenience matters more than a scenic address.
