Vienna offers several ways to extend a city stay. The Wachau brings vineyards and small towns along the Danube, Bratislava provides a nearby capital to explore, while the Passau–Vienna cycle route offers a longer holiday ending in the capital. Each offers a different pace from Vienna's museums, palaces and busy central streets.
Budapest, Salzburg and Munich are also natural additions to a wider itinerary, but they deserve more than a hurried return journey. These six suggestions combine day trips, a multi-day cycling journey and places to stay next. Use them to build a route that leaves time for meals, walks and the smaller details that make each stop worthwhile.

Wachau Valley
The Wachau follows the Danube through vineyards, villages and historic towns between Melk and Krems. Choose a visit to Melk Abbey, a walk around Dürnstein or a smaller stretch of river for cycling and wine-country scenery. It is a rewarding day from Vienna if you keep the route focused. Check seasonal boat connections and leave time for a meal without trying to visit every town.
Bratislava
Bratislava offers a compact Old Town, a castle above the Danube and a different atmosphere just beyond Vienna. Walk the pedestrian streets, stop in a café and head uphill for river views if the climb suits you. It makes a manageable day trip, with enough time to look beyond the main square. An overnight stay adds a quieter evening and more room for the city outside its historic core.
Budapest
Budapest spreads across both sides of the Danube, with grand avenues, thermal baths, market halls and memorable river views. Explore Buda's hills and Pest's busier streets as separate parts of the experience. It is a strong onward choice from Vienna, especially with a few nights available. Allow time for a bath, a local meal and an evening walk instead of a rushed return trip.
Passau to Vienna by Bike
Follow the Danube from Passau to Vienna through Linz, Melk and the Wachau on a multi-day cycling journey. Allow roughly a week of riding, with extra time for abbeys, towns and river stops. This is a longer holiday ending in Vienna, rather than a day trip from the city. Salzburg
Salzburg offers a smaller city, a dramatic fortress and an Alpine setting after Vienna's grand scale. Walk the Old Town, cross the Salzach to Mirabell Gardens and choose a hilltop viewpoint or musical landmark. It deserves an overnight stop on a westward journey, with time for cafés and the streets after the day-trip crowds thin out. A longer stay also opens up the surrounding lakes.
Munich
Munich makes sense as an onward destination from Vienna, with Bavarian food, royal residences, art museums and extensive parks. Mix Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt with a neighborhood walk, the English Garden or a beer garden. Give it several nights if you can, rather than a long return day trip. The city also provides a useful base for lakes, palaces and the mountains of southern Bavaria.
Final Thoughts
Choose a limited stretch of the Wachau if you only have a day, and check how trains, buses or boats fit together before leaving Vienna. For the Passau–Vienna ride, plan daily distances, overnight stops and bicycle transport before committing to the full route. A shorter ride near Vienna is an alternative if you only have a day.
Bratislava suits a day visit, while Budapest, Salzburg and Munich are better given at least an overnight stay when possible. Compare the full travel time, including station transfers, and reserve popular attractions separately from your transport. Keep some space in the itinerary for weather and a slower start.
