Venice fits naturally into a wider journey through northern Italy and across the Alps. Verona and Bologna offer city outings with very different characters, while Lake Garda adds water, mountain views and the option of a slower stay. Milan adds art and design, Munich combines Bavarian culture with an Alpine rail journey, and Genoa opens the way toward the Ligurian coast.
These six suggestions are not all equivalent day trips. Travel time matters, and the farther destinations are more satisfying as onward stops with luggage and an overnight stay. Choose the place that complements your time in Venice, whether that means opera, food, art, a lakefront walk or a working port city with a very different feel.

Verona
Verona combines Roman remains, lively squares and walks beside the Adige, with the Arena giving the city a strong connection to opera. Explore beyond the best-known romantic landmarks and leave time for the market area, bridges and a relaxed meal. It works as a day from Venice, but an overnight stay is especially worthwhile if you want to attend an evening performance.
Bologna
Bologna rewards time under its long arcades, around market streets and at the table. Explore Piazza Maggiore, look for the city's medieval towers and pause for fresh pasta or a food-shop visit. It offers a lively contrast to Venice and works well as an onward stop. An overnight stay gives you room for an unhurried dinner and the everyday atmosphere beyond the main sightseeing streets.
Lake Garda
Lake Garda combines lakeside towns, boat trips and a landscape that becomes mountainous toward the north. Trains reach Peschiera and Desenzano on the southern shore, with onward buses or boats to Sirmione; the northern towns deserve more time. From Venice, choose a specific base rather than trying to circle the lake. An overnight stay makes room for swimming, walks and a slower day by the water.
Milan
Milan brings a different Italian city experience, with the Duomo, major art collections, design and lively neighborhoods. Explore the center, then make time for Brera or the canals around the Navigli. It works best as an onward stay from Venice rather than a hurried round trip. Reserve ahead if seeing The Last Supper matters to you, and leave space for the city beyond its famous cathedral.
Munich
Munich combines grand architecture, lively markets and traditional beer halls with a memorable train journey from Venice. The route crosses the Alps via the Brenner Pass, offering mountain views along much of the way. Allow several nights to explore the historic center, museums and palaces, while leaving time for a beer garden or an excursion into the Bavarian Alps.
Genoa
Genoa offers a working port, palaces and a historic center of narrow lanes, with a character very different from Venice. Explore the old harbor, look into the palace streets and stop for focaccia or pesto. The longer journey makes it an onward destination rather than a sensible day trip. Stay a few nights to get your bearings and consider extending the route along the Ligurian coast.
Final Thoughts
Plan from Venezia Santa Lucia if you are staying in the historic city, and allow time to reach the station with luggage. Verona and Bologna can suit a day outing; Lake Garda needs additional planning because the train reaches only part of the lake. Boats and buses may add considerable time beyond the station.
Milan, Munich and Genoa are more rewarding as onward stays. Reserve major museums or performances when they matter to your plans, and check station names carefully when booking. For a less tiring itinerary, spend more time in fewer places instead of returning to Venice after every stop.
