Salzburg sits close to some of the region's most appealing lakes and mountain landscapes. Berchtesgaden lies across the German border, while the Salzkammergut offers villages, swimming spots and walks beside the water. Salt mines, ice caves and cable cars add other ways to explore, although they are separate excursions with different demands.
The six suggestions below range from nearby outings to onward stays in Vienna and Munich. Hallstatt is beautiful, but its popularity calls for realistic expectations. For a more relaxed day, choosing one lake or mountain experience can be more enjoyable than covering a long list of famous stops.

Berchtesgaden
Berchtesgaden combines a small Bavarian town with some of the region's most striking mountain scenery. Spend time beside Königssee, take a boat toward St. Bartholomä or choose a walk that suits your energy and the weather. It is a natural excursion from Salzburg, but distances between sights add up. Focus on one area for the day and allow time simply to enjoy the landscape.
Salt, Ice & Peaks
Choose between the Salzwelten salt mine near Hallein, which can be paired with the nearby Keltenblitz summer toboggan run, the Eisriesenwelt ice cave above Werfen and the Untersberg cable car south of Salzburg. Each offers a different experience of the mountains, from mining history to ice formations and open views. Treat them as separate outings: the ice cave involves demanding steps and walking, while cable car views depend on the weather.
Hallstatt
Hallstatt's lakeside houses and steep mountain backdrop deserve their reputation, but the village can feel overwhelmed by visitors. Walk the waterfront, explore the small lanes and leave time to enjoy the setting beyond the main photo stop. An early arrival or overnight stay can improve the experience. If you prefer more space, consider another Salzkammergut lake instead.
Salzkammergut Lakes
Fuschlsee, Wolfgangsee and Mondsee offer lakeside villages, swimming, boat trips and walks with mountain views. Choose Fuschlsee for a quieter shoreline outing, Wolfgangsee for towns such as St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang, or Mondsee for its village and basilica. Pick one lake for a relaxed day from Salzburg, allowing time for a meal rather than rushing between all three.
Vienna
Vienna makes a rewarding next stop after Salzburg, with imperial palaces, major art museums and a strong tradition of music and coffeehouses. Walk the Ringstrasse, explore the historic center and leave room for a neighborhood market or the Prater. Rather than squeezing it into a return day trip, stay a few nights so the city has time to become more than a list of landmarks.
Munich
Munich combines royal residences, art collections and Bavarian traditions with large parks and lively neighborhoods. Browse Viktualienmarkt, walk through the English Garden and leave time for a beer garden or a museum. It is a useful onward stop from Salzburg, with enough variety for several days. Staying overnight also makes it easier to enjoy the city beyond its central squares.
Final Thoughts
Let the weather guide mountain outings and check seasonal opening dates before planning around a cave, cable car or boat. Eisriesenwelt involves substantial walking and steps as well as cold conditions underground, so it needs more preparation than a lakeside stroll. Treat the salt mine, ice cave and Untersberg as separate choices.
Hallstatt is best approached with time and patience; other lake villages offer appealing alternatives. For Vienna or Munich, consider an overnight stay and continue from there. Crossing the nearby border also means checking which transport tickets cover your full route.
