Nuremberg is a useful base for seeing more of Franconia and continuing through Bavaria. Bamberg brings riverside streets and brewing traditions, Bayreuth adds opera and courtly gardens, and Coburg combines a handsome town center with a large hilltop fortress. Rothenburg offers the best-known medieval townscape, though its popularity affects the experience.
Regensburg and Munich broaden the choices beyond Franconia. The six trips below work at different paces: a walk and lunch in a smaller town, a day built around one major attraction, or several nights in another city. Choose the place that adds something different to your time in Nuremberg.

Rothenburg
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is known for its town walls, timber-framed houses and closely packed medieval lanes. Walk beyond the busiest photo spots, follow part of the walls and look toward the Tauber Valley. It rewards a full day from Nuremberg, especially if you leave time for quieter streets. An overnight stay lets you experience the town after many of the excursion groups leave.
Bamberg
Bamberg combines an unusually well-preserved historic center with river scenery, cathedral history and distinctive beer traditions. Walk past the Old Town Hall, explore the lanes around the cathedral and look across the Regnitz toward Little Venice. It is a rewarding day from Nuremberg, with enough variety for a longer stay. Leave time for a brewery meal and a slower riverside walk.
Bayreuth
Bayreuth is much more than a name on the opera calendar. The Margravial Opera House, palace gardens and Eremitage reveal a city shaped by courtly ambitions, while Richard Wagner adds a different musical story. Plan a day from Nuremberg around the places that interest you most. Performances need advance thought, but architecture, gardens and cafés also make a worthwhile visit.
Regensburg
Regensburg brings Roman remains, medieval towers and the Danube together in a compact historic center. Cross the Stone Bridge, visit St. Peter's Cathedral and follow the lanes toward the river and Stadtamhof. It is an appealing day trip from Nuremberg, particularly if you enjoy exploring on foot. Stay overnight for a slower visit, with time for cafés and an evening along the water.
Munich
Munich makes an easy next chapter in a Bavarian journey, with royal residences, important art collections, markets and large public parks. Combine the historic center with the English Garden or choose a museum and a neighborhood to explore. A day from Nuremberg gives you a taste, but several nights let you enjoy the beer gardens, cultural life and smaller streets at a better pace.
Coburg
Coburg combines an attractive market square and former ducal residences with the Veste, a substantial fortress above the town. Explore the center before deciding whether to walk uphill or use local transport for the castle. It is a good choice from Nuremberg for history and a smaller-town atmosphere. Allow enough time for the collections, a café stop and the views across the hills.
Final Thoughts
Avoid combining several towns just because they appear close on a map. Changes between trains and the journey from the station into town can use more time than expected. In Bayreuth, check performance dates and tickets if music is part of the plan; in Coburg, allow for the uphill approach to the Veste or arrange local transport.
Rothenburg is more enjoyable with an early start or an overnight stay. Bamberg and Regensburg reward time beside the river as well as at the main sights. Munich has enough to fill several days, so consider it as an onward destination if your itinerary allows.
