Shrine traditions, spring blossoms and illuminated winter streets

LOCAL CULTURE

Festivals & Events

Osaka’s festivals and seasonal events have strong links to the city’s shrines, merchant traditions and waterways. The photographs show Osaka on ordinary sightseeing days, not the celebrations themselves.

THROUGH THE YEAR

Event Highlights

A selection of festivals, seasonal celebrations and cultural experiences to consider when planning your visit. Check official event or venue websites for current dates, programs and ticket information.

Tenjin Matsuri: processions on land and water

Tenjin Matsuri centers on Osaka Temmangu and is traditionally held on July 24 and 25. The shrine’s deity is carried in a land procession and then onto boats, connecting the shrine with the Okawa River. The boat procession and fireworks are the best-known parts of the celebration.

If you want the river events, plan the viewing area and return journey separately from an ordinary sightseeing route; the banks and nearby stations become very busy.

Toka Ebisu: Osaka’s merchant tradition

At Imamiya Ebisu Shrine, the January Toka Ebisu celebration is associated with prayers for business prosperity. Visitors collect decorated bamboo branches and lucky ornaments, making it a particularly fitting festival for a city with Osaka’s commercial history.

The shrine is south of Namba, near the Shinsekai area. Check the shrine’s program before planning a visit around it.

Spring: the Japan Mint’s cherry-blossom passage

The Japan Mint, north of Osaka Castle beside the river, opens a special passage through its cherry trees for a limited spring period. Its many varieties make it a different visit from an ordinary walk in the castle park.

This is not a path you can assume is open every day. Recent editions have used advance booking; check the Mint’s visitor information for the year’s entry arrangements. The castle park and Okawa riverside offer other blossom walks, with flowering dependent on the weather.

Winter: Midosuji and Nakanoshima illuminations

The Osaka Festival of Lights includes Midosuji Illumination along the city’s main north-south boulevard and OSAKA Hikari-Renaissance around the civic buildings on Nakanoshima. The tree-lined shopping and business street and the riverside public buildings provide two distinct settings for an evening walk.

These are seasonal installations, separate from Dotonbori’s year-round signs and teamLab’s ticketed garden. Use the official program to choose a route, since the individual displays do not all run on the same dates.
